EUref 2016: The Great EUlogy to Modern Politics

We really start this blog with the clear motive of giving our insight and opinion on EUref with the research and bombardment of leaflets, media that we have at our disposal.

The European Referendum has been the most farcical political event that I have had the misfortune to witness. For us as young adults, this is our first political demonstration which we will be able to take part in. In addition to that, this will also be the first for thousands of newly 18-year-olds to participate in the rather unappreciated fortune of being in a democracy. What an amazing sight for us to be galvanised by on our maiden voyage into the terrifying abyss that is politics.

From our perspectives, we have all recently learnt a lot about globalisation in our recent Geography A- Level, now I do point out that if I've passed that or not, is another question. Yet, either still, it has given us a particular insight on the actual importances of the EU and globalisation as a whole.

OPINION In terms of economics leaving the EU could be a disaster depending on what happens with currency and the euro if we're forced to change our currency would depreciate causing aggregate demand and the entire economy to contract and implode. But it's all hindsight. - Matthew Farrell

Why are people voting Leave?

With all this information from their debates and posters taken into account, it is still immensely unfathomable to the privileged individual of Britain who spectates this charade from afar. The monstrosity that is the xenophobia and hatred of Britain First or UKIP.

Why do so many Britons follow such a racist and ignorant ideology, as unpractical as it is, the only possible explanation is that they must be all ignorant to the social and economic reality themselves?

That they are all too stupid to recognise the faults in the false promises and be too foolish to make an informed and ‘rational decision?

Right?

Now, it is very easy to scrutinise the “ignorance” of others and especially the people we may see as ‘inferior’. Because we are told to believe that these alienated parades of people on TV shows like 'benefits street' or 'thugs' on the Jeremy Kyle Show obviously don't have the mental capacity to make a right decision in their lives?

Since it’s not as if that is a new-fangled experience for these so-called ‘bigots or hippy liberals’ to be perpetuated as the quintessence of ignorance. Because it is so blatantly simple for them…

They know that it doesn’t work for them, they know that the current political paradigm does not work for them. They know that their voice isn’t heard. So, why vote the same robotic politician who uses the same bland speech. As the facts and figures relate to the only increasing and reoccurring problem of the poorest and disadvantaged in society being ignored. In addition to the fact that the social issues of race and gender are still present, whatever the ethnicity or sex ‘the most powerful man/woman in the world’ may be.

Therefore, the only way out of this excruciating system is to vote Leave. Because no matter what happens if they do leave, it will be a change. People are desperate for change. We saw it in the Election in 2015 with the rise of the SNP, UKIP and now with social liberalism of the Labour Left and to even mention Bernie Sanders in America. The polls cannot be ignored, the people can no longer be ignored. Whatever if it's tainted notion of immigration that is the issue or the relatively capitalist society in Europe.

The vote Leave campaign is always been asked for an answer to the future past the vote, what will happen next? You don't know? How could you not know? How could you gamble the lives of millions for the unknown. But maybe that's the whole point. People are so disenchanted from the present paradigm that they will do anything for change.

But, it is us who fall for the status quo. Speeches advertise love as their forefront. Why do people fall for the same ‘togetherness’ vocabulary and semantics fields of hope?

Perhaps we are scared, and we believe what we want to hear. Because it’s awfully terrifying out there. These intractable issues, in all of us, we all need hope, to carry us throughout our lives.

Since with decades of promises by these politicians, time and time again they fail us. These liberal ideologies fuelled by the youthful euphoria of adolescents only to die away as we accept the foul pragmatism that we cowardly accept day in day out because we are frightened of change.

I find it difficult not to sympathise with the Leave campaign. As it's been tainted to be a campaign for 'bigots' made up from the working class of Britain who has faced the full burden of failed politics with their social security being sacrificed such as NHS, housing and education. Is it fair for us, the ‘intellectual’ and extremely fortunate individuals to stand on the sidelines jeering on because we don’t sit on the broken swing of equality?

We may know that in terms of practicality, we can’t simply create millions of jobs or save the world from poverty and terrorism or erect a new hospital or school from thin air.

With the public going tiered, it is only inevitable that this change would happen.

We like to be sedated. That's why staying IN is so appealing because why change anything? If we can live our lives in the strict but functioning parameter for a particular set of people whilst we acknowledge the bureaucratic EU who holds so much power in the world that it can destroy an economy of a third world country or even an anti-austerity movement in Greece in a snap of its fingers.

OPINION From my viewpoint, our country faces the most uncertain future if we do indeed leave the EU. On one hand, we could take a giant leap of faith into the dark unknown with no knowledge of what will happen if we leave. But if we stay, we shall remain firmly secure and integrated with a vast amount of countries, cultures and people. We shouldn't just give up on the EU because some of us are enraged with some irregularities involved with it. Instead, we should continue to fight to and support one another. As an 18-year-old aspiring to go to university I truly fear for our age groups' economic future as leaving could suspend our fragile economy in the air and I don't see any need to risk it. -Tom Davis

The Main Issue

What is more important than anything than this referendum that it has shown is the lack of compassion we show each other as the coming generation. That people can be demonised for giving their opinion with slapped on labels a 'BIGOT' or 'RACIST' with no further justification.

This is the exact issue we have in young people these days. That we are all ignorant. We don't have that experience or empathy to even think what it might be like in modern society. Belittling others for their freedom of speech just encourages POLITICS not to be talked about. I don't like seeing people getting demonised or silenced with labels every 5 seconds because their opinion might be legitimate to how they feel and how it is for them. Because silencing people is not helping. It's not opening the discussion. It just creates further disenchantment from politics and discourages people from actually talking about it. No wonder these campaigns can manipulate people so easily because people have no idea what the f*ck is going on.

I'm not here to encourage or legitimise racism or xenophobia. I'm showing the sheer indifference that is occurring throughout the UK and that this is much more than what side is good or evil. This whole charade is not so black or white, left or right.

That there is much more that we, students or young adults can do for change than fighting each other. Whatever the result tomorrow, we can no longer ignore the disenchantment and division that is so prevalent in our society. I want to seize the day for change. But, there is no way I could possibly back a campaign that purposely uses the misfortune of others to back their own agendas. Maybe one day the EU will reform or a revolution in politics will take place.

There is a time for change and a choice that we must make. But not to be made out of desperateness or foolishness, but the knowing that we can achieve a better future, with the right leaders and in the right time.
